I read The Lovely Bones, by Alice Sebold over the weekend. On Friday night, I kept telling myself, "only one more chapter, only one more chapter", to find myself at 2 am sobbing on the couch. The tears were induced by a scene about three quarters of the way through where the narrator (a 14-year old girl who is raped and murdered in the first chapter) writes about how people on earth are constantly being watched by those who have died. I couldn't help imagining my two grandfathers watching me all these years, and it made me cry. The grace of this novel is that it is not emotionally manipulative, although it is deeply affecting and beautifully-written.
